Hallmarking

Hallmarking rules are as follows:

  • In the UK it is illegal to sell or describe any item as gold, silver, platinum or palladium unless it is hallmarked (providing the item is over a certain weight).

  • Sterling silver pieces must be hallmarked if they weigh over 7.78 grams. If they are under this weight they will not be hallmarked. If your item weighs under 7.78 grams and you would like it hallmarked, then this can be arranged for a small fee.

  • Solid gold items that weigh over 1 gram will be hallmarked. If your solid gold piece weighs less than 1 gram and you would like it hallmarked, this can be arranged for a small fee.

  • Gold plated sterling silver items over the required weight will be hallmarked with a sterling silver hallmark.

My pieces are hallmarked by the Birmingham Assay office.
